Sustainable development is most commonly defined as meeting the needs of the present without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. That's why we're calling our programme 'Forever Food', we're making sure that the way we produce food for consumers today will allow our children and children's children to harvest the Earth's food resources as well.

We have a long standing commitment to Sustainable Development and the launch of our 2010-15 Forever Food plan represents the latest phase in this journey.

What are the most far reaching changes to the business as a result of Forever Food i.e. what are the key commitments set out in your Integrated Sustainable Development Plan 2010-15?

We have made a number of far reaching commitments but one of our biggest is to source all our wild and farmed fish from certified sustainable resources by 2012 - a first for a UK manufacturer

Is the packaging used for Birds Eye Products recyclable?

Birds Eye's primary packaging is already 93% recyclable and more than 80% is from sustainable sources. The majority of virgin fibre card is from sustainably certified forests and 9% of our cartons are made from recycled board. We aim to ensure that all of our paper packaging will be recyclable by 2012.

Do you use palm oil in your products?

Palm oil makes up less than 5% of our total oil use and we do not use palm oil for frying. Where we use palm oil it is as a component of other ingredients as it has properties that we are unable to recreate with other types of oil.

The Forever Food programme is a welcome expansion of BEIG's sustainability aims and other organisations such as WWF very much supports its ambition to become a leading initiative driving change for sustainability in supply chains and in consumer behaviour.
